“My life is pretty good now, but I think it could be even better if I can do something to impact the society, something challenging, and also something which can benefit my son. That’s how I discovered STEM For Kids…which I would say is the perfect fit for me!”, remarks Jin Zhao as she reflects on her decision to become the STEM For Kids franchisee for California Fremont area.
Educated as an Urban Planner and Designer from China and UK, early in her corporate career, Jin worked at a top international architectural firm which has developed numerous skyscrapers and master plans around the world, including the world’s tallest building, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa standing 2700 feet tall.
She loved her job, its promise of serving public interest, the traveling and her contributions in significant projects. One of her projects involved developing a master plan in the city of Guangzhou, China. The project site was as big as 1/3 of San Francisco! She and her team spent nearly two years to develop a beautiful vision plan for the site, identifying the land uses, building density, population, transportation system and everything else needed for functional and sustainable public spaces. The team won a global design award.
Jin’s next move brought her to the Silicon Valley as she worked on projects for tech firms such as Facebook, Yahoo, Salesforce and Google. Ten years in urban designing, impressive client roster and huge scale projects… Jin was ready for her next chapter to chase the two goals of her life – to constantly improve herself and to help others.
She studied User Experience Design and founded a startup company focusing on a marketplace for home-made baked goods, aiming to enable people eat healthier.
“It was a really fun journey, I loved dealing with all kinds of challenges that turned up from time to time…”
Her son, now 19 months old, brought the next turning point in her life.
“I am amazed at Jin’s unfaltering focus on balancing her work with public interest. The bridge that she is creating from her past career in designing the future of our public spaces to shaping the foundational building blocks of our societies, our children, through STEM For Kids, is remarkable. I can’t wait to see the wonderful opportunities Jin will create for the children in Fremont”, remarked Moni Singh, the Creator of STEM For Kids.
