AI’s Human Creator Brings Hands-On Learning to Atlanta Suburbs

Morrisville, NC and Cumming, GA 7/16/18

” I was never a book learner. I was a tinkerer and learned by doing. I have to know the context of what I am trying to learn.  I call it a Use Case Learner. I try to teach my kids that same way”, says Tom Hyatt, STEM For Kids’ franchisee in Cumming, Georgia.

Tom, an accomplished network engineer and a self-proclaimed ‘IT Geek’, began his education with an intent to pursue a business career. He double majored in business and computer information management. In his junior year, he traveled to countries in western Europe, the former USSR [Soviet Union], and parts of Scandinavia studying International Business.

In an internship in IT [Information Technology] of Virginia Department of Transportation, he learned how to rebuild computers and maintain their computer systems.  That internship turned into a full-time job for another five years.

In his 30 years of professional career, Tom has worked in a broad range of IT roles including Network & Systems Administration, Tier 3 Support, Systems Engineering, and Software Configuration Management Architecture.

Tom’s world has been super exciting and dynamic thanks to the enormous transformations and developments in computing technologies.

Today, his work involves Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). AI / ML are ubiquitous now, used to recommend what you should buy next online, to understand what you say to virtual assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri, to recognize who and what is in a photo, to spot spam, or detect credit card fraud. The applications and possibilities are endless as efforts are underway to take AI / ML towards adaptable intelligence to mimic human brain and intelligence.

In this cutting-edge technological landscape, he is developing an agricultural application that helps farmers determine the health of their crops and allows them to share their data with a community of farmers, agronomists, crop scientists and researchers.

“It is great to have Tom as part of the growing STEM For Kids’ family. We wish Tom great success in his endeavors”, says Moni Singh, the Creator of STEM For Kids.

“ [when working with kids], I try to explain real life application of what they are learning and to bring their learning to life.  STEM For Kids methods and curricula fit my learning approach well; I knew I can use these to make learning fun and real for my kids and other children in the Alpharetta area”, says Tom as he contemplates his decision to become a STEM For Kids franchisee.

As a franchisee, Tom has a huge and growing curriculum portfolio to leverage for his quest, ranging from coding to engineering, biomedicine, robotics, engineering and business.

Moni adds, “Tom’s story reminds us of how fast the world of STEM is evolving. Technologies that we depend on today, didn’t even exist a few years ago. In this fast-changing world, it is critical for schools, educators and potential franchisees wanting to get into education, to partner with an innovative company that has an ongoing focus on creating new STEM / STEAM curricula that’s attuned with the real market developments.”
