Plan a STEM Troop Event!  Please schedule at least 6 weeks in advance.  Below are some programs you can choose from or send a request to design something to fill specific needs or desires of your troop. Troop Events last 1 – 1 1/2 hours depending on troop request.

Cost: $10 - $12 per hour per girl (No charge for adults) 10% discount for groups of 10 or more.

Description

Parachute Design Lab

Girls will learn about the forces that impact flight.  In this workshop, we will focus on two forces- weight and drag.  Using Engineering Design Process, participants will make and test parachutes.  Through improved designs and testing, they will learn the effect of surface area, length, and weight may have on parachutes.

Forces in Flight!

An Aerospace Engineering Adventure with forces that impact flight.  In this workshop, we will focus on thrust, drag, and weight.  We will make paper choppers and test them out using hands-on exploration of these forces.  Through scientific inquiry and experimentation, we will learn the effect of more weight, bigger wing size, and a different wing turn on choppers’ motion.

Adventures with Air

Participants will explore Aerospace Engineering as they explore different types of flight and learn through multiple hands-on activity the power of air and how it is used in aerospace to design different aircraft.

Balancing Forces

Participants will learn about the 4 forces Aerospace Engineers must contend with while designing aircraft.  The participants will perform multiple experiments to understand the importance balance plays in keeping aircraft up and controlling speed and safe decline.

Mission Possible! Bridge Building

A civil engineering mission wherein participants engage with gravity and balancing hands-on activities.  Thinking like a Civil Engineer, they will work their way to bridge a river!

Amazing Balance of Gases

We live in the bottom of a sea of gases we call the atmosphere.  What is in the air?  Participants will learn about air pollution through stimulating simulations and experience the amazing balance of gases that make life possible on Earth.

Connected Ecosystem

Our ecosystem is a complex network of living things and their physical environment.  In this scintillating adventure, participants simulate an ecosystem to experience the connections involved and they design and make their own keepsake of a food web!

Motion Commotion

In this introductory Mechanical Engineering program, participants explore push, pull, motion and the laws that govern motion.  They will apply their knowledge to launch rockets!

Take a Brake!

Students learn the nemesis to motion is friction in this Mechanical Engineering workshop.  In their mechanical quest to control motion, a Stop-It- Droid, is built and tested.

Rolling Wheels! 

The Rolling Wheels Workshop is specially designed to engage participant’s minds using hands on activities exploring fundamentals of rolling down a ramp.  Participants will investigate what factors impact their cars’ ability to travel the farthest.  These are the same ideas mechanical engineers consider when designing cars or efficient factory systems.

Simple Machines

One of the oldest and broad fields of engineering, Mechanical Engineering deals with  design and production of machines and tools.  In this program, participants will explore simple machines and will make a showcase comprised of simple machines like gears, inclined plane, wheels , pulleys, and levers.

Coding:  Dancing Names (Scratch)

This is an exciting introduction to computer programming.  Participants learn the basics of creating programs using a series of unplugged activities followed by a drag and drop programming lesson to create a simple animation of their own names.

Coding:  Let’s Get Started! (Scratch)

This introduction to coding provides participants a chance to explore the world of computer programming using a simple drag and drop program, SCRATCH.  The participants will be introduced to how to utilize SCRATCH programming to expand their imagination and create exciting programs of their own.

An Hour of Code (Code.org)

Code.org is an amazing opportunity for participants who have never programmed a computer before!  There are experiences available and our coaches will facilitate the participants through their first exposure to programming- surely to be the first of many adventures.  We know programming is exciting and an amazing outlet bringing

Robotic Land Rovers!

This introductory workshop allow participants to discover the design and implementation of land rovers, vehicles built to go places humans can’t; Mars, Caves, volcanos. . .   Participants will not only build the rovers but program them to explore and bring data back!  Simple building and programming is as exciting as it is challenging!

Robotic Racecar Design

Racecars are built and programmed using WeDo 2.0 robotic kits.  The participants will have an opportunity to use the Engineering Design Process to build, and redesign their racecars to max out the speed!  The participants will program the racecars to go the distance and speed they choose! Drivers- start your engines!

Robotic Earthquake Machine

Participants will learn about the importance of design of buildings in earthquake zones.  An earthquake tester robot will be built and programmed to test building at varying “seismic degrees”.  The participants will discover the best shape of a building to keep it upright during an earthquake.
